This site has been created for you, seeking to explore beyond and behind the attractions.

There are a broad range of explorations on this website for every level of capabilities.   Some points can be seen from you car window, others require a hike.  Most of these posts fall somewhere between these two.

Everyone that is familiar with Colorado Springs knows about the many tourist attractions that the area has to offer.   They are all worth exploring. Some are more interesting that others, some are free, some are pricy but the tourist attractions are all worth the experience.

Tourism created this city and tourism is still a large part of what this city has become.   I hope this site provides some interesting facts, many hours of exploration of our beautiful area, or at the very least, some trivia that you will enjoy.

By bike, foot or car, there are explorations waiting for you, and this small website will help get a few people started exploring beyond the surface of the attractions.

  2. Has anyone, (besides me), hiked the old rail line that issues East from the now closed Tunnel at the Gold Camp/Old Stage intersection? (This may now be very difficult to access-you used to be able to just walk through the tunnel to get to it) I had always assumed that the Short Line followed Gold Camp exclusively. (Pretty dumb, as there would be no need for a tunnel!) But this stretch, (which I can’t remember if it terminated, or if I didn’t hike all of it), sits well above Gold Camp Rd. I just wonder if this was some kind of spur from the main line, or if this WAS the main line, with the section of Gold Camp that circled the mountain being added later for auto traffic.
    Would love to find out, before my time on earth ends, preferably.

  3. Hello, Dan. You have discovered the two forgotten tunnels on the Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek Railway. Tunnels #7 and 8 were left out in the woods when the Corley Mountain Highway was built. (Newer maps call them #6 and 7.)The confusion on how the road translates from the railroad is understandable. The missing link is a trestle over Old Stage Road that no longer exists. I have several maps that illustrate this, but I can’t attach files on this reply. There is enough information that makes it a perfect fit for my next piece on Beyond The Attractions.   4. Cool! And thanks for the reply. I’m so curious as to how the tracks differed and where. Also, I only discovered the one tunnel at the intersection of Old Stage and Gold Camp. I’m assuming I might have come to the other had I kept walking the grade. And maybe have even come across trestle ruins? I’m afraid this was quite a while back, so I can’t remember if I actually reached the end of the bed, or if it ended and made me retreat back to the tunnel. Now it seems that it would be much more difficult to access the bed, since the tunnel appears to have been blocked off. This is why I always take advantage of opportunities. You never know when access becomes difficult or impossible. I welcome anything else you care to share with me. I’m not sure I’ll remember to look at new postings/sites. Thanks for what you do!
